What the Future Holds

Once you were a different being
An empty cup, a hollow ring
As endless time had its earthly way
You split your hours ’tween work and play

You read the tales, you sang the songs
Of days to come and the years beyond
Now I don’t know what you’ve been told
But this is what the future holds

The future holds decaying health
Hard-earned wisdom, loss of self
A broken chair, a rotting fish
The future cares not what you wish

The future brings new joy to heart
The sister missing from the start
The smell of sulphur in the air
A gain of weight, the loss of hair

The future holds the future you
All your fears and your hopes too
they come to roost inside your soul
So make a nest for them to grow

The future brims with endless love
your baby teeth, a long lost glove
The things you hoped to leave behind
The future comes when it is time

The future holds eternal loss
A fav’rit pet, a hated boss
The wish for just one moment more
A night spent sobbing on the floor

The future pours from darkened cracks
It lifts your feet, it snaps your back
Just when you thought you’d seen it all
The future builds and breaks the wall

The future holds so many things
A feathered tail, two leather wings
A single horn, a triple scoop
That holy feeling when you poop

The future gives what must be got
In equal parts, both bloom and rot
There is no breaking from this pact
The future has one final act

We all run blindly from the past
Our hunger first, our knowledge last
So toss your maps, you can’t detect it
The future comes when you least expect it

And wipe that smile from your face
Then spread your arms, one last embrace
You mind is dust, your body cold
This is what the future holds
